FPL Core Insights: A Comprehensive FPL Dataset

I share with you an interesting Dataset and repository about FPL (the England’s Premier league). This data powers FPL Core which I recommend to check out to see the kind of output you can get from the data.

The dataset includes player data including minutes played, goals, xG, etc team statistics, ELO rankings and more. It’s updated twice per day.

OpenF1: detailed Formula 1 data, available through an API

Formula 1 produces an enormous amount of data during every race weekend, but getting access to it in a clean and usable format has traditionally been difficult.

OpenF1 is an open-source API that makes much of that information available to developers, analysts and fans.. You can access its endpoints really easily and grab the data for your analysis and other projects.

The API currently covers 18 different areas of an F1 weekend, including:

• Car telemetry such as speed, throttle, brake usage, RPM, gear and DRS

• Lap and sector times, mini-sectors and speed-trap measurements

• Driver positions, intervals and gaps to the race leader

• Tyre compounds, stint lengths and tyre age

• Pit-lane and stationary pit-stop durations

• Approximate car locations around the circuit

• Track and air temperature, rainfall, humidity and wind

• Race-control messages, flags, incidents and safety-car periods

• Session results and championship standings

• A limited selection of team-radio recordings

There are some cool implementations based on this data. People are really creative.

Turning Speed Climbing broadcast footage into performance data

Speed climbing takes place on a standardized 15-metre wall which is a gold mine for comparisons. Two exactly equal courses and two different climbers. However it is not that much explored , or at least I haven’t seen many analysis during recent years.

Tara Lind’s new project shows how much more can be extracted from footage. You can basically create your tabular dataset from images.

The pipeline begins with YOLOv8 pose estimation at 30 frames per second. Because the model occasionally swaps the two competitors, detections are assigned to persistent left and right identities using the Hungarian algorithm (clever!).

Apparently the hardest problem is camera movement. Lind detects ORB keypoints in the background, estimates frame-to-frame homographies with RANSAC and chains those transformations into a stable reference coordinate system. Knowing the wall height is important to convert all the information into pixels.

That produces height and velocity curves which could support sector splits, hold-to-hold comparisons, acceleration analysis and the identification of inefficient movements. I am quite unfamiliar with all of these wall climbing specifics but it’s super interesting.

This is a good example of applied sports computer vision where most of the real work happens around the model, and it’s really clear how hard all those tasks are: identity management, camera compensation, calibration and timing precision. Those details are the “moat” and it’s clear than knowing the sport in and out are still mandatory. No AI can supply that (nor the passion).

A few days ago, Fanatics announced plans to acquire BGC Group assets to launch its own prediction-market exchange, pushing Fanatics further beyond sportsbook operations into regulated event-contract infrastructure.

For hiring, this likely increases demand around quant research, risk, real-time data engineering, trading systems, compliance technology, and ML rather than only classic sportsbook analytics.

FanDuel likely to be building a new data-engineering layer

This week appeared a group of six FanDuel data-engineering openings across Atlanta and New York, ranging from Data Engineer through Senior Data Engineer and management, with reported base ranges roughly $116k–$186k.

That supports the pattern that arises in sports and data related industries, sports-tech companies increasingly need infrastructure behind their ML and analytics

What if football (soccer) had a shot clock?

Football (soccer) does not impose a shot clock, but every possession still has an age: the number of seconds since a team won the ball.

Marc Lamberts uses that idea to model possessions as a Markov decision process. The state combines the ball’s location with a “possession clock,” while teams choose between actions such as advancing, moving sideways, playing backwards, crossing or shooting.

The model is built from 136 Ecuadorian Liga Pro matches and 37,075 possessions. Because many lineup-and-state combinations have little data, the estimates are partially pooled: lineup behavior is pulled toward the team, and team behavior toward the league, depending on how much evidence is available.

What makes the article especially good is that it does not stop at the model. It discusses discretization choices, paired simulation design, data sparsity, implementation mistakes and the strategic reactions that the model cannot capture.

The broader lesson applies well beyond football: a sophisticated model is only as convincing as its assumptions, diagnostics and ability to survive attempts to break it.

FIFA World Cup 2026 - The hydration break effect in the Fifa World Cup

One of the big talking points during the World Cup has been whether cooling breaks change the momentum of a match.

Fernanda Pieri looked at the data and found something more interesting: the breaks usually didn’t change which team was in control, but they did reduce the intensity of that control.

A team could still dominate after the restart, just with less pressure, fewer attacking actions, and less momentum than before.

Despite the result of the analysis, I think the hypothesis she wanted to test and how she did it is really useful. It’s a “simple” question but quite important to answer because this is an innovation in how the game is played. Understanding the effect at high stakes games can be helpful to think about if we want to keep this for certain occasions, always, never? How are we impacting the game by changing it?

You can take the same question and maybe look at it in a different angle?

It’s a good example of how data can challenge the way we describe a game. In some games it might have affected more than in others, or the perception, or maybe we are biased because we were rooting for the dominant team but looking at the overall data of the World Cup is the right way to analyze the effect in a larger scale.

Building Reproducible Football Analytics

Summary

One of the biggest challenges in football analytics isn’t creating new metrics, it’s making them reproducible and comparable across different datasets.

This project, by Minho Lee, tackles that by combining open football data with SkillCorner and K League data to build transparent implementations of metrics like xG, xPass, and Expected Threat (xT). Beyond the analyses themselves, the author is standardizing event data around a common structure, publishing the code, and showing how these models can answer real football questions instead of just producing rankings.

This project has three main goals:

1. Standardising open football data
Building on open-source foundations such as SPADL and kloppy, I am working to convert open datasets into a structure as close as possible to the Common Data Format (CDF) (Link). The goal is to apply comparable analytical workflows across different data sources, while making model inputs and assumptions easier to inspect.

2. Turning data into football stories
Using K League and SkillCorner data, I explore what each metric can reveal about players, teams, tactical structures, and decision-making.

3. Sharing reproducible implementations
Where possible, I reimplement selected metrics using SkillCorner open data and publish the code. The aim is not only reproducibility, but also to provide a common basis for comparing different models and implementations under the same data structure and assumptions.

If you’re interested in football analytics, open-source tooling, or learning how metrics such as VAEP, EPV, Pitch Control, and xT are implemented in practice, this series is well worth following. It offers both practical insights and reusable code that you can build on yourself.

The world cup is being played, lots of games in this initial group stage with the most diverse set of teams. A lot is going on, some expected wins but also great effort by smaller teams trying to make the most of the world cup. CapeVerde with actual chances to make it to the next stage as it got a draw against one of the title contenders, Spain, and against the always hard to beat Uruguay which is struggling a bit so far. Then yesterday, Haiti made two beautiful goals in the first half surprising Morocco, who ended up winning but I assure you the locker room in the half time was probably quite shocked.

Then France, Argentina, Brazil, Netherlands doing their thing and moving to the next stage, as well as the home teams USA, Mexico and Canada securing their ticket to the next phase.

If you want to have a bit more fun and use some data to create some charts, analysis, improve your data manipulation skills or even create some sort of prediction model you will for sure benefit from the following repo.

Why this dataset? Unlike other World Cup datasets, this one is (1) updated daily with real match results as games are played, (2) fully relational with normalized foreign keys for SQL/database modeling, (3) contains zero synthetic data — every stat is sourced and traceable, and (4) includes advanced metrics like xG, match team stats, and VAR events.

It’s a live dataset which means it’s updated continuously as the World Cup progresses.

The repository has explanations and links about how to use it. It’s easy and really complete.

The Knicks are trying to slow down Wemby during Pick and Rolls

I really liked this X/Twitter thread. Even more relevant today after yesterday’s result..

You can see in the video a lot of actions where players like Brunson appear in the middle of the roll and just block Wembayama from going to the paint easily to get the pass. He is disturbed every time making it more difficult, and that’s kind of enough to highly reduce the points per possession.

The chart is really nice and summarize this effectively, showing clearly how many times and where this Tagging happens. You can add on top of that the points per possession in those plays and you get a clear image of what’s going on on the court and the impact it has on scoring.

You don’t always need a super complex model to show interesting analytics and in game situations. In these case you need data though.

What Makes a Great Shooter? A New Open Basketball Biomechanics Dataset

What can we learn from a basketball shot?

A group of researchers released the SPL Free Throw Dataset, an open dataset containing hundreds of free throws captured with motion-tracking technology.

The dataset includes:

• 3D body pose data at up to 60 FPS

• 69 body keypoints, including fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and more

• Ball trajectory data (x, y, z coordinates)

• Shot outcome information

• Hoop entry location

• Ball entry angle

In total, there are nearly 600 free throw attempts available, with every trial stored as a JSON file and organized chronologically by player.

What makes this dataset interesting is that it connects movement mechanics with shooting outcomes. Instead of asking whether a player made the shot, you can start asking questions such as:

• Which joint movements are most consistent among successful shooters?

• How does release angle affect entry angle?

• Can we predict whether a shot goes in before the ball leaves the shooter’s hand?

• Which biomechanical patterns lead to more repeatable shooting form?

The authors also provide animation tools so you can visualize the entire motion sequence and recreate each free throw in 3D.

Whether you’re interested in machine learning, biomechanics, computer vision, or player development, this is the kind of dataset that can easily turn into a weekend project—or a full research paper.

Building a Data Department From Scratch at Sunderland

This was a really interesting one because it’s not about a specific model or metric. It’s about something a lot harder: building an actual data culture inside a football club.

James Young talks through his path from mechanical engineering and biomechanics into sports analytics, eventually joining Sunderland to build their data and analysis department almost from scratch during the League One years.

A lot of the conversation is about process design, communication and organizational structure rather than pure modeling. Honestly, that’s probably closer to the real day-to-day work in sports analytics than people expect.

Some of the most interesting parts:

• how they built recruitment workflows combining scouts + data instead of treating them as opposites,

• why “translation” is one of the most valuable analytics skills,

• the importance of defining a football philosophy first and then aligning recruitment/data processes around it,

• and how hard it is to introduce analytics into environments where people are naturally skeptical.

One thing I liked a lot is his point about data people needing to meet organizations where they currently are instead of trying to force a revolution overnight. He describes analytics as “another smart person in the room” rather than something that replaces expertise. Feels like a much healthier way to think about sports data.

There’s also a lot of good operational stuff that people rarely talk about publicly:

• setting up infrastructure,

• standardizing workflows,

• improving efficiency for analysts,

• building trust internally,

• handling messy data,

• and making insights usable for coaches and recruitment staff.

And if you follow Sunderland’s recent rise, it’s pretty interesting hearing how intentional the club was about recruitment profiles, squad age, player development and long-term processes during those early rebuilding years.

Less “here’s a fancy model”, more “here’s how analytics actually gets embedded inside a football club.” Really good watch for anyone interested in sports analytics leadership, recruitment, infrastructure or decision-making processes.

Modeling, Markets and Why Most Backtests Lie

Really enjoyed this conversation. It’s framed around sports betting models, but honestly most of the ideas apply to sports analytics in general: forecasting, probabilities, validation, uncertainty, signal vs noise, and the psychology of building models.

One of the recurring themes is something a lot of people skip when starting a project: why should this work in the first place? Before building pipelines or tuning models, they start with exploratory checks and simple hypothesis testing to see if there’s even a potential edge there. Sounds obvious, but probably saves months of building models around noise.

They also go deep into things most people in analytics learn the hard way:

• why backtests can look amazing for completely wrong reasons,

• how easy it is to leak information into your validation,

• why ROI without enough sample size is basically meaningless,

• and how markets evolve fast enough that yesterday’s edge can disappear.

There’s also a really good discussion about Bayesian thinking in sports. Not in a textbook way, but practically: priors, updating beliefs, weighting preseason expectations vs new observations, handling small samples, early season uncertainty, etc. The live betting example using halftime totals was especially clean.

A few other interesting points:

• recent form is probably overrated,

• schedule context is underrated,

• distribution modeling matters more than people think,

• and good modelers spend a surprising amount of time fighting their own confirmation bias.

Even if you don’t care about betting specifically, this is one of those conversations that maps really well to forecasting/player modeling/general sports decision-making.

Worth the watch if you enjoy modeling under uncertainty and the constant battle between data, priors and market reality.

How bad analytics built a Tottenham team that might get relegated

A really interesting article about Tottenham and how “using analytics” doesn’t necessarily mean using analytics well.

The article basically argues that Spurs ended up optimizing for the wrong things. Tons of focus on athleticism, speed, explosiveness, physical metrics… and somehow they built a team that simply can’t pass the ball properly.

That’s the funny part because passing is probably the most fundamental skill in football. You can have all the runners and athletes you want, but if you can’t consistently move the ball, everything becomes harder.

One thing I liked a lot is that the article doesn’t attack data itself. Actually the opposite. The point is that sometimes clubs use numbers to confirm what they already believe instead of challenging their assumptions.

So instead of:
“does this player help us win?”

It becomes:
“look, we found metrics that support why we liked this guy already”.

There’s also a nice connection with Moneyball there. Billy Beane famously kept asking “but can he hit?”

The football version here is:
“but can he pass?”

Short article, easy read, and honestly a good reminder that more data does not automatically mean better decisions.

Why College Football Player Analytics Is So Hard

Came across a great piece from Parker Fleming about a problem that doesn’t get talked about enough: why evaluating players in college football is fundamentally messy.

If you’ve ever tried to model player performance (or even just compare prospects), you’ve probably felt it, the data looks rich, but something is off.

This article explains why.

Worth reading the full piece, but here’s the core intuition:

The hidden problem: you don’t observe the player, you observe the coach’s decision

In most sports, actions are relatively standardized. Think baseball: pitcher vs batter, repeated hundreds of times.

Football is the opposite.

Players don’t just “perform”, they’re deployed.

• A player runs a route… because the coach thinks he’s good at it

• A lineman pulls… because the scheme asks him to

• A defender blitzes… because of a matchup decision

So what you measure is already filtered.

Participation = prediction

Coaches pre-select what players do based on their beliefs.
Then analysts come in and try to infer player quality from those same actions.

Kind of circular.

Problem #2: sample size is a small

Even for high-usage players:

• ~10 targets per game for a WR

• 3–4 seasons max

• Development curves all over the place

You barely reach statistical confidence at the end of a career.

For linemen or off-ball roles? Even worse.

You’re modeling noise + development + context… with tiny samples.

Problem #3: every snap is a different environment

Not all snaps are equal:

• Better players face tougher matchups

• Weaker players get protected by scheme

• Conferences vary massively (SEC vs MAC)

So even if two players look similar on paper , they’re not playing the same game.

So what’s the takeaway?

Most models try to isolate player skill from production.

This article argues that’s the wrong framing.

You need to model:

• Coaching decisions

• Role assignment

• Context + matchups

The key idea to keep in mind

Don’t measure the player.
Measure the player within the system.

If you’re into player modeling, scouting, or building anything around recruitment / roster optimization, this is one of those pieces that resets your intuition.

How We Built an NFL Draft Model for the Minnesota Vikings in 2015

This is a great read from the people at Lander Analytics about the story of how they started using analytics for the Draft at the Minnesota Vikings.

From cold email → blue stickers → one of the best drafts of the decade

• A random email landed inside the Minnesota Vikings and reached a scouting intern sitting on untapped draft data

• No fancy tools at first. Just Excel, messy data, and one big question: who will actually be good?

• A call with Jared Lander turned football instincts (“fast enough matters more than fastest”) into machine learning logic

• And then, translating this to the executives in a friendly way.
  → complex probabilities became simple blue stickers on a draft board

• Draft night: 9 of 10 picks carried those blue signals

• Years later, hits like Stefon Diggs and Danielle Hunter helped define the class

It’s a short article that really gets you in the story, I felt every step like a small movie and if you worked with data it will hit close. The data stored in excel files, putting all together, trying stuff over and over, etc. I don’t know, it was a really pleasant read and I wanted to share it with you. It felt even a little motivational to go get the data and do things. 10 years ago an NFL team started, you are still way on time to put the effort.

Break into analytics

You follow us and use Sportsjobs Online because you are looking for sports analytics opportunities which are hard to find and you want to know about them first. That’s sincerely a great move.

What happens when someone reaches out or you have your first interview? Are you prepared for that? If you start a new role? Well, some of you might but if it is your first interview for a sports analytics role then it is logical to not have the experience. The next great move is to be prepared, with knowledge and some work under your belt.

I always suggest that you have some personal project you are interested to show recruiters of managers. Something you have done with public data where you show that you can handle data, you can create a workflow and present results to someone visually and/or written. In previous posts there are lots of resources about different ways to do that. Like replicating statistical metrics with your own dataset, using other data, creating notebooks using data from Big Data Bowl or Hockey Analytics, etc.

Another way to get more experience is to learn from experts, join courses that focus on that. This could also be complementary, do your own thing but also learn from people in the industry. You will be much more comfortable talking to managers, handling data and asking the right questions.

The problem

Forechecking is usually described with systems (1-2-2, 2-1-2, etc.), but:

• turnovers don’t happen because of a formation

• they happen because space and options disappear over time

So the question becomes:

Can we measure that pressure and predict when a retrieval will fail?

What they did

They built a framework (Retrieval Denial Topology) that measures:

• pressure on the puck carrier

• availability of exit lanes

• how fast those lanes close (e.g. within seconds)

• support from F1, F2, F3 (layered pressure)

Instead of static proximity, they model how the situation evolves.

Main results

• Higher pressure → harder to escape cleanly

  • ~46% denial (low pressure)

  • ~64% denial (high pressure)

• Turnover prediction:

  • AUC = 0.742 (their model)

  • AUC = 0.640 (nearest-defender baseline)

So modeling how options disappear clearly adds signal.

Main takeaway

Strong forechecks are layered forechecks

F1 matters, but the key is:

• F2 and F3 arriving in time

• removing the next options

• compressing the play

That’s what actually drives turnovers.
